This collection contains 11 series: Thomas Spalding I papers, 1802-1848; Charles Harris Spalding papers, 1888-1898; Randolph Spalding I papers, 1859-1866; Thomas Spalding II papers, 1871-1884; Thomas Bourke Spalding papers, 1879-1884; Randolph Spalding II papers, 1887-1940; Ella Barrow Spalding papers, 1874-1929 and undated; Spalding family, miscellaneous; Richard Leake papers, 1785-1812; Clement Martin, Sr. papers, 1771-1785; Genealogy. The series consist of correspondence, bills, genealogical materials, personal a business accounts, and other personal papers. The genealogy series includes a Bible belonging to Mrs. Thomas Spalding (Sarah Leake Spalding); and Thomas Spalding's Bible, containing records of births, deaths, and marriages. Not included in the series, but in the collection is the marriage settlement of James Spalding and Margery McIntosh, 1772.

Spalding, Thomas, 1774-1851

James Spalding (1735-1794) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He moved to America circa 1760, first arriving in Charleston, South Carolina. He moved to St. Simons Island, Georgia, in 1763 and established the mercantile firms of James Spalding and Co. in East Florida, McKay and Spalding on St. Simons Island, and Spalding and Kelsall at Sunbury, Georgia.
